A written-off loan he was sure he never took. The truth was more complicated.
By Supraja, Kenstone Credit.
Background
Manjunath E approached us for rectification of his CRIF credit report. It showed a loan account marked Written Off, and it was blocking a new loan. He was certain he had never taken the loan.
The investigation
I contacted the lender, who stated the loan was linked to his KYC documents. Because the client remained certain, I escalated and requested the complete KYC and loan documents submitted when the loan was availed.
The finding was important. The KYC documents were genuinely his, but the signature on the loan documents was not. Further review showed that even the signature on his PAN card was not his own. He explained that, years earlier, a friend had signed the PAN on his behalf.
The honest advice
With the evidence in front of us, the account was legitimately associated with his KYC. I shared every document with him, explained the situation, and advised that clearing the outstanding was the practical way forward. He reviewed the proof, agreed, and made the payment.
Resolution
Once the dues were cleared, I continued follow-up and escalated again for removal of the Written Off status from CRIF, which succeeded. And because the older months carried no DPDs, I requested that the bank mask the historical DPD reporting as a goodwill measure. The bank masked approximately 24–36 months of historical entries.

Why this case matters
Many clients arrive certain that an account is fraud. Sometimes it is. Here, the investigation showed something more complicated, and our job was to put the evidence on the table and give honest advice, not to sell a dispute that could not succeed. Careful document verification, transparent communication, and persistent follow-up resolved what a hundred template disputes never would have.
