Key takeaways

  • The Integrated Ombudsman Scheme covers the credit bureaus themselves — you can file against CIBIL or any bureau, not only the lender, free and without a lawyer.
  • The precondition: complain to the entity first; the Ombudsman opens after the prescribed window passes unresolved (30 days for credit corrections) or on rejection.
  • It can order the correction and award compensation, including wrongly denied ₹100-per-day delay compensation, and its awards bind the entity.
  • The complaint that wins is a documented timeline: your dispute, their silence, your evidence, and the precise correction sought.

What it is

One scheme, and it covers the bureaus.

The RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 merged the older ombudsman schemes into one door for complaints against RBI-regulated entities, and, decisively for credit repair, credit information companies are covered: you can file against CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark, not only against the lender. It is free, needs no lawyer, and its awards bind the regulated entity, which is why a well-documented Ombudsman filing changes the behaviour of institutions that ignored six polite emails.

When and how

The precondition, and the filing.

The door opens only after you have complained to the lender or bureau directly and either received no resolution within the prescribed window, our dispute guide covers the 30-day rule and the ₹100-per-day compensation beyond it, or received a rejection you dispute. File online through the RBI's CMS complaint portal: state the facts in order, attach the paper trail (your dispute, their replies or silence, your documents), and say precisely what correction you seek. The complaint that wins is the one where the timeline and evidence tell the story without adjectives.

After

What it can order, and what comes next.

The Ombudsman can direct the entity to correct the record and can award compensation for loss and for deficiency in service, including where the ₹100-per-day delay compensation was wrongly denied. Many complaints resolve at the conciliation stage, the entity, suddenly attentive, fixes what it ignored. If the award goes against you, appeal lies within the scheme; if the entity fails to comply, that is a supervisory matter the RBI takes seriously. And through it all, keep every acknowledgement: our published corrections repeatedly show the escalation paper trail doing the persuading.

Quick answers

Answered first.

Can I complain to the RBI Ombudsman about CIBIL?

+
Yes. Credit information companies are covered by the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, so complaints can be filed against the bureau itself, not only the lender — typically after your direct complaint has gone unresolved through the prescribed window or been rejected. Filing is free, on the RBI's CMS portal.

How long before I can approach the RBI Ombudsman?

+
File your complaint with the lender or bureau first. If it is not resolved within the prescribed period — 30 days is the operative window for credit information corrections — or is rejected in whole or part, the Ombudsman door opens. Going straight to the Ombudsman without that first complaint gets the filing returned.

Does filing with the RBI Ombudsman cost anything?

+
Nothing. The scheme is free, filed online without a lawyer, and designed for individuals. Anyone charging you a fee to "file an RBI complaint" is charging for a form you can complete yourself in an evening; pay, if at all, for evidence-building, not filing.

What can the RBI Ombudsman actually do?

+
Direct the regulated entity to correct your credit information, and award compensation for loss caused and for deficiency in service — including wrongly denied delay compensation. Its awards bind the entity, subject to the scheme's appeal provisions, which is why documented complaints get taken seriously.

What if the lender ignores the Ombudsman's direction?

+
Non-compliance by a regulated entity is a supervisory matter for the RBI, and entities know it — which is why compliance is the norm. Keep every order and acknowledgement; the paper trail that won the complaint also enforces it.
