DPD in your CIBIL report, decoded.
Full form, what the numbers and codes mean, how the 36-month grid is read — and when a DPD entry is wrong enough to dispute.
Key takeaways
- DPD full form: Days Past Due — each grid cell shows how many days one month's payment was overdue when reported; 0/000/STD means on time.
- Codes decode as asset classifications: STD standard, SMA early stress, SUB/DBT/LSS non-performing to loss — anything beyond STD reads as risk.
- The grid shows up to 36 months per account, most recent first; XXX means "not reported", not negative. Clean months steadily push bad ones off the visible window.
- Wrong DPD lines are among the most-corrected errors in our documented cases — on-time payments reported late, closed accounts still accruing, or another borrower's conduct on your file. They are disputable, with evidence.
The full form
DPD: full form and meaning.
DPD (days late, month by month) stands for Days Past Due. On every account in your CIBIL report sits a month-by-month grid, and each cell answers one question: when the lender reported that month, how many days overdue was the payment? 0 (printed as 000, or the code STD) means on time. 30 means a month behind. 90 or more means serious delinquency — the territory where accounts turn non-performing. The is the most granular truth the report tells about repayment behaviour, and it is what underwriters actually read line by line. For the one-line version, see DPD in the glossary, along with STD, SMA, SUB, DBT and LSS and XXX.
The codes
STD, SMA, SUB, DBT, LSS — decoded.
Some lenders report classification codes instead of day counts, borrowed from the RBI's asset-classification framework: STD (Standard — regular conduct), SMA (Special Mention Account — early stress, typically 1–89 days), SUB (Sub-standard — a non-performing asset), DBT (Doubtful) and LSS (Loss — the most severe, where the lender no longer expects recovery). Anything beyond STD (five codes, healthy down to loss) reads as risk; SUB, DBT and LSS read as serious derogatory history. Two of our published cases carry entries in their before-evidence — and their removal in the after.
Reading it
How the 36-month grid works.
Each account shows up to 36 months of history, printed most-recent first. XXX (no information reported that month) means the lender did not report that month — an information gap, not a black mark. Because the window rolls, every clean new month pushes an old one toward the edge: conduct is not a life sentence, it is a moving picture. The rest of the report's anatomy — statuses, enquiries, account sections — is decoded in our full report-reading guide, and every status code in the status-codes guide.
When it's wrong
Wrong DPD entries — and what fixes them.
Wrong are among the most common errors we correct: payments made on time but reported late, closed accounts still accruing DPD months after closure, or another borrower's conduct welded to your file. The consequences scale with the stakes — on the commercial side, a single erroneous DPD line can sink a company's CMR rank, and our documented Tamil Nadu case moved CMR 7 to CMR 3 on exactly that correction. The route is always the same: dispute with evidence through the lender and the bureau, escalate under the RBI framework when it stalls — the full dispute playbook is here, and the service, when you want it run for you.
